Frequently Asked Questions
General F.A.Q.'s
  • How Can I Track My Order
Click Here and enter your tracking number.
  • What kind of plug do I need for different countries?
Click Here for a list of International plug specifications.
  • Do you offer FREE incoming calls?
"Free Incoming calls" do not exist on satellite phones. Some satellite services come with an INTERNATIONAL phone number. The person directly dialing an international number actually pays a long distance rate which can vary from $4 to $7 a minute. In this case, the satellite phone user does not pay airtime charges, but the caller is paying to through their long distance provider. There may be some instances where this option is convenient. For example, when dealing with associates or clients you want to pay for the call. This "caller pays" option is available with Iridium which we also have as a rental option. Globalstar comes with a US based phone number so this is not an option with Globalstar.
  • What are the calling codes for different Countries?

Globalstar F.A.Q.'s
  • What Is a Service Provider?
This is a Globalstar Communications System operator who sells, installs (or arranges to have installed), and supports the Globalstar Fixed Satellite Phone. The Service Provider is the entity that will bill a customer for the airtime used.
  • How much will the Globalstar service and fixed satellite phones cost? Will there be a monthly access fee?
Service providers and their distributors are responsible for determining their own service pricing plans and phone prices. Plans are structured similar to cellular pricing plans.
  • Where can I buy a Globalstar Fixed Satellite Phone?
Right here!! Click here for details on our fixed satellite phones
  • Can I use the Globalstar Fixed Satellite Phone to place a call on a cellular network?
No. The Globalstar Fixed Satellite Phones provide Globalstar satellite communications only.
  • How do I pay to use a Globalstar Payphone?
Standard billing, credit card, or bank draft options are available.
    EQUIPMENT QUESTIONS
  • What kind of telephone can I use with the Globalstar Fixed Satellite Phones?
You can use any good quality, analog telephone set with your Globalstar Fixed Satellite Phones. (You cannot use a digital phone with it.) You will need a telephone set that supports standard DTMF tones (industry standard touch-tone dialing tones), not pulses, for dialing. The voice quality of your communications depends in part on the voice quality of the telephone set you select.
  • Can I use an answering machine with the Globalstar Fixed Satellite Phone?
Yes. The two-wire telephone interface makes the Globalstar Fixed Satellite Phone compatible with most answering machines.
  • Can I use any telco wire instead of the QUALCOMM cable?
You can use telco wire inside the building. However, the cable that connects to the RAU needs to meet certain specifications. Your Service Provider can provide or create a compatible cable for you.
    USAGE QUESTIONS
  • Can I make data and fax calls with the Globalstar Fixed Satellite Phones?
The Fixed Satellite Phones support packet data and digital fax capabilities. Globalstar Service offers data services (up to 9.6 kbps throughput) currently.
  • How many telephone sets can I connect to a Globalstar Fixed Satellite Phone?
Up to five QUALCOMM-supplied telephone sets, all using one telephone number, can be connected to one Radio Antenna Unit (RAU).
  • How many telephone numbers does one RAU support?
Each RAU supports one telephone number. For each additional unique telephone number, an additional RAU is needed.
  • What is REN?
REN stands for Ringer Equivalency Number, and is a measure of the load a telephone set represents on your phone system. A higher REN means there is a greater load on the system than a lower REN telephone set. As the load on the system increases, the ability of the telephone set to ring on an incoming call and/or the ability to hear a voice in the earpiece decreases. A typical telephone set could exceed 1.5 REN in some cases. Most telephone sets would have a range of 0.8 to 1.0 REN. The REN of a particular telephone set is often printed on the bottom of the set.
  • Can I connect the Globalstar Fixed Satellite Phone to a PBX?
Yes. Any PBX that offers a two-wire trunk side interface should be compatible with the RAU.
  • How many phones on my PBX can one RAU support?
This depends on how much call capacity is required for a particular installation and on the size of the PBX. Each PBX is different. Check the manufacturer’s specifications.
  • Can I install or use the Globalstar Fixed Satellite Phone on an airplane?
No. The Globalstar Fixed Satellite Phone is not authorized for use on aircraft.
  • Can I install a Globalstar Fixed Satellite Phone on a recreation vehicle (RV)?
Your Globalstar Fixed Satellite Phone can be used on an RV. Installation will vary depending on your particular RV.
  • What kind of supplementary phone services does the Globalstar Fixed Satellite Phone support?
The Globalstar Fixed Satellite Phone system supports call forwarding, caller ID, 3-way calling, and call waiting (features dependant on network support).
  • What call progress tones is the Globalstar Fixed Satellite Phone capable of producing?
Using the Globalstar Fixed Satellite Phone, the telephone set will produce dial tone, busy signal, fast busy, and intercept tone. A stutter dial tone (A stutter dial tone is the sound needed for connecting with the internet) for voice mail indication will be produced where network availability allows. Please refer to the User Guide for a description of the tones.
  • How can I speed up my connection to the Globalstar Communications System when making a phone call?
After you enter the phone number you want to call, there is a ten-second delay before the call is transmitted to the Globalstar Communications System. During this interval, the Globalstar Communications System is waiting to determine if you will enter additional digits. To avoid this delay, you can press the pound key (#) to signal the system that you have finished dialing.
    INSTALLATION QUESTIONS
  • Can I install the RAU and junction box myself?
No. Typically your Service Provider will install the system or contract for the system to be installed.
  • How far away can I cable a telephone set from the junction box?
A telephone set with 5 REN may be cabled a maximum distance of 168 meters (550 feet) away from the junction box. As the total REN of the telephone sets to be connected decreases, the total local loop length (total cable run between the junction box and connected telephone sets) will increase. It is possible to achieve distances of 305 meters (1000 feet) or more with a REN that is sufficiently small.
  • How far apart do two RAUs need to be?
Each RAU should be at least 1.5 meters (5 feet) away from another RAU, assuming they are mounted at the same height.
  • Are there any line of sight requirements?
The antenna of the RAU needs to have a direct or unobstructed line of sight to the Globalstar satellites, down to 10 degrees above the horizon in all directions.
  • Is there any way I can separate the antenna from the radio electronics unit (RAU)?
No. The entire RAU is an single integrated unit and cannot be separated. Do not attempt to change your installation yourself. Contact your Service Provider if you want to relocate the RAU or junction box.
  • What if I cannot provide an unobstructed line of site to the horizon for the RAU?
If the RAU must be mounted where the line of sight could be obstructed, refer to the Installation Manual for details on optimizing installation for your environment. Your Service Provider should do this work. Do not attempt to change the installation yourself.
    POWER QUESTIONS
  • What power sources can I use to power the Globalstar Fixed Satellite Phone?
The Globalstar Fixed Satellite Phone can be powered by a reliable source of 12-volt-inverter, battery, generator, or solar panel.
  • How is the Globalstar Fixed Satellite Phone powered?
The Globalstar Fixed Satellite Phone is powered by a 12 VDC power source capable of supplying a minimum of 3 amps of current. The voltage, as measured at the RAU, should be in the range of 9.5 to 16 volts or the RAU could be damaged or simply not work properly. Your Service Provider will provide you with the necessary power source. Do not hook up a power source yourself or attempt to use a power source of your own choice unless it meets the requirements in the Installation Manual. Contact your service provider with any questions.
  • Does the power supply included with the Globalstar Fixed Satellite Phone come with a backup battery?
Yes. A backup battery is included in the Enhanced Kit. It can also be purchased separately and provides approximately 3.5 hours of talk time or 24 hours of standby time.
  • What happens if I lose power?
If you lose electric power, and you have battery backup, the power supply for the Globalstar Fixed Satellite Phone will automatically switch over to battery.
  • Can I plug the power supply into any AC outlet?
Yes. The power supply that comes with the Globalstar Fixed Satellite Phone is designed to be compatible with universal AC output. The power cord shipped with the kit is plug compatible with the AC wall outlets of most countries. If your installation requires a plug that was not provided in your kit, contact your Service Provider.
  • If the backup battery is installed in the power supply and the power supply is unplugged, will the battery still be connected?
Yes. The battery is always connected in parallel with the AC to keep it charged and ready for switchover in the event of primary AC failure. The battery charges when the AC power is available. When the AC power is not available, the battery automatically supplies power to your Globalstar Fixed Satellite Phone.
  • Can a solar array be used to power the Globalstar Fixed Satellite Phone?
Yes. QUALCOMM has tested and approved the SunWize™ Power Ready solar electric power system and other related products from Atlantic Solar. Other sources for solar power are possible as well. Contact your Service Provider for details.
  • What does solar power cost?
The price of installation will vary with your power needs and your location (average number of days of sunlight). QUALCOMM does not supply this type of power. Contact your Service Provider for information.
  • If I am using solar power, can I use the phone at night or on cloudy days?
Typically, yes. The solar panel charges the battery in the daytime and the battery supplies power to your Globalstar Fixed Satellite Phone. As long as you do not exceed the storage capacity of the battery, you can use the phone at night or on cloudy days. Discuss the size requirements for the battery with your Service Provider to ensure adequate talk and standby time coverage for your needs, taking into consideration how much solar exposure is available at your installation site.
