Getting email to work reliably over a satellite phone at a reasonable cost is a daunting task. Most satellite phones connect at low bandwidth speeds of 2400 to 9600 baud and can measure latency (the time it takes for a piece of information to travel from one computer to another) in seconds rather than milliseconds. While standard Internet protocols can operate under low bandwidth, high latency conditions, they are just not optimized for such conditions. This makes sending and receiving email both difficult and expensive.

With compressed, bi-directional data transfer, SPSMAIL software achieves throughput speeds four or more times faster than standard POP/SMTP connections and twice that of general purpose accelerated gateway software. SPSMAIL software will connect reliably in situations where IP based networks will not.

SPSMAIL is easy to install and maintain and supports most satellite networks including ACeS, Globalstar, Inmarsat (Mini-M, M4, MPDS, Regional BGAN), Iridium, Mobile Satellite Ventures, and Thuraya. SPSMAIL will also support asynchronous and Internet Gateway calls on CDMA and GSM mobile phone networks. In the deployed software, SPSMAIL supports Codan and SCS Pactor II HF modems.
