This summer we had an archaeological project on the west side of Adak in the Central Aleutian Islands, with a crew of nine people, working for two months. We were working in Three-Arm Bay, a remote part of Adak, and we used the satellite phone to call nightly for weather reports and to let the Fish and Wildlife Service logisitics person know we were safe. One of the most pleasant parts of the package we rented was the SPS Mail. The software was loaded onto my small Acer netbook and we were able to send and receive e-mail during the two months we were there. The software was intuitive and easy to operate. All we had to do was plug the satellite phone into the computer through the USB and call.

We updated our project Facebook page to let family, friends, and the interested public know what we were doing and to report new discoveries by sending photographs (which the software automatically reduced the file sizes of between 20k to 4k) and an e-mail to one of the crew in Anchorage to upload to Facebook. It was also important for the crew's morale because tehy were able to send notes to their families and get news from home. During previous years we were out of communication for the duration of the project and there was a greater problem with people becoming homesick, or concerned for their families...

...Given the rewards, the cost was minimal and I would definitely include the cost of having e-mail access in remote field situations.

I am enclosing with this letter the return of my Iridium 9500 rental package. The package was originally due to your store on January 18. Last week I called and spoke to one of your representative (a) to make sure the phone would not be turned off if it was kept beyond the rental period and (b) to adjust the 25 minute pre-purchased bundle of minutes to a 180 minute bundle (which may still be inadequate).

I want to sincerely thank you for making this phone available on a rental basis and for delivering it to me on time. As I indicated in the rental application, my wife and daughter traveled to Haiti on a missions trip. While there, the earthquake struck and for at least two days the only communication any of the missions team had with the outside world was the Iridium phone. It became essential to notifying friends and family of the well-being of members of the mission team and in communicating evacuation strategy and plans to the group. Obviously the phone was used far more than the original intent of a hand-full of five minute phone calls at the end of each day.

I do not know what my charges will ultimately be, but for 43 people trapped in Haiti, it was money well spent. Thank you.
